The July NPD numbers are in and there's nothing really new here as Nintendo continues to dominate the charts with the DS/Wii Tag team. What's surprising is that despite a pseudo price cut the Xbox 360 failed to sell more units than the PS3 last month. While the PS3 is still getting some echo sales from
Metal Gear Solid 4,the fact that the Xbox failed to pick up much last month has to be raising some eyebrows in Redmond. Here are the final numbers from NPD (courtesy

DS 608k
Wii 555k
Playstation 3 225k
PSP 222k
Xbox 360 205k
Playstation 2 155k
Microsoft did own the top spot for softwar sales as the 360 version of
NCAA Football 09 moved more units than anything else last month and the Xbox 360 version of
Soul Calibur IV outsold the PS3 version by approximately 63K units. The rest of the chart is dominated by Wii and DS games.
Guitar Hero:On Tour selling nearly 370,000 units has to make Activision happy.

Next month I would expect more of the same as there aren't any major exclusive titles coming out in August (I don't think
Braid or
Castle Crashers are system sellers). Next month should see
Madden 09 for the 360 in the top spot but it will be interesting to see what the gap between the 360 and PS3 versions of the game.
