Today, Sony unveiled the specifics of the PlayStation 5 Pro. This new console boasts a better CPU and GPU and faster RAM. How much better?
Well, Sony went into just general terms as they said the CPU has 67% more compute units while the RAM runs 25% faster. With the larger GPU, Sony is saying the rendering speed gets an uplift of 45%. All combined, Sony states the PlayStation 5 Pro has double the performance of the PlayStation 5.
The GPU looks like it'll have better ray tracing performance and an upscaling technology. They call it PSSR or PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. I wonder since it's running on AMD hardware if it's not just an implementation of AMD's FSR, which is on the PC.
All together, Sony wants to remove the choice of playing the game in performance or fidelity mode and let you have it all. Smoother gameplay at 60fps and better graphics, the PlayStation 5 Pro is the machine Sony hopes will deliver that to you,
The design change of the shell looks to be minor with four strips going to the back of the unit. From the video, it looks like this will only be a digital console, no Blu-Ray drive.
And the price. Sony's announced that the PS5 Pro will cost $700, which sounds pretty expensive. That's a $250 increase over the PS5 Digital Console. We'll have to see once reviewers get their hands on it if it's worth that cost increase. But for now, check out some of the PS5 Pro in action and if you already have a PS5, will you upgrade?
-Update-
The Sony Blog has more details on the PlayStation 5 Pro. The $700 price point is only for the digital version, but you can add a Blu-Ray drive if you want. No word on the cost. Default storage size will be 2TB, a 2X increase over the original PlayStation 5. The PlayStation 5 Pro will launch on November 7th with pre-orders starting September 26th.
