Op Ed: Are there too many remakes?

by: Joseph -
More On: Dead Rising

I might be choosing a little bit of violence here, but I stumbled across this thought with my last post of Epic Mickey: Re-brushed. In the last month, we've seen trailers for that game, and releases for others like Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, and Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, I pose the question: Are there too many remakes?

Bare with me for a second, because I'll be brief, Just off the top of my head, Silent Hill 2 is getting a full remake. Yacht Club Games just announced that Shovel Knight Treasure Trove is getting an HD remaster, for an already good looking pixel based 8bit game. Konami's Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a remake. Nintendo's Luigi's Mansion 2 is getting an HD release. Square Enix announced that Dragon Quest 1-3 are getting HD-2D remakes, much like the Final Fantasy 1-6 Pixel Remasters. Until Dawn is getting remastered, even though it's already beautiful, and I won't use the "for a PS4 game" disclaimer. Even Ubisoft decided to delay, but then re-confirm The Prince of Persia the Sands of Time remake. albeit 2025. But I digress. I'm not complaining. These have worked before. I bought Final Fantasy VII Remake day one. No question. Played the hell out it, enjoyed it, and bought Rebirth, with no question. Enjoying the hell out of it.

Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 all got the update and upgrade treatment, and they were fantastic. Fantastically reviewed, amazing updates as far as quality of life, and maybe made the others obsolete. Marvel VS Capcom Arcade Fighting Collection is going to sell like gangbusters, even though the FGC will be most of the people buying and playing it. This comes with love to Capcom, because they are super good at making their legacy content available. And then the unthinkable happened, because Capcom.

I gushed about Dead Rising: Deluxe Remaster AKA DRDR, because as fun as Dead Rising is, it already received an HD remaster. It ran at a way better resolution, and loaded up way faster, but the game was the same. It's almost like Capcom knew this was hilarious, because it seems to be making fun of itself. They just released info on the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster Digital Deluxe Edition. This is not a joke. It's the remastered version of the game, with I'm sure all the DLC, but with a whole gang of extra costumes. Am I mad about it? I don't really know if mad is the word.

I'm here. In the game industry. And it's hard to get an original idea off the ground these days. Though Elden Ring is a fan favorite, and Street Fighter 6 released to critical acclaim, even though it's complaining players are being called "scrubs." Of course I already know the movie and entertainment industry is already riddled with remakes and re-releases in HD. This isn't also to make people rabble rouse online. I'm just asking a simple question. Are there TOO many remakes? When does it stop? Does it need to? Ok, so I had more questions.
