My first job was at big box retailer Target, where I eventually made my way to working in the electronics department – you know, the one with video games. The night before the launch of the PlayStation 3, I purchased an Xbox 360 and a copy of Gears of War. After getting home and firing up my new “next-gen” console, Gears of War promptly blew my mind. I remember thinking that video games will never get better than that – peak gaming, if you will. I share that anecdote because Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is releasing on September 9th and seeing it in motion takes me right back to that feeling of experiencing Gears of War all over again.
A new gameplay overview video from Focus Entertainment does a superb job of setting the table, but suffice it to say, Space Marine 2 seems like a complete package. It features a narrative campaign that can be played either solo or with up to three players in co-op. When you’re done with that, there is the Operations mode which are co-op missions that seem akin to the old Spec Ops missions in Call of Duty. And finally, Eternal War is the game’s 6v6 multiplayer mode where you can team up and take on other humans online with an arsenal of customizable weapons and armor.
