I'm a child of the 80's so JCVD and his movies is basically an inseparable part of my own childhood story. A man who earned his Hollywood star doing splits and fighting in arena style movies, can anyone actually tell the difference between Bloodsport and Kickboxer? His stint as Guile in the 1994 Street Fighter movie was far from a highlight. That entire production was a mess with Raul Julia dying months before release, drug use on set (allegedly by JCVD no less), a runaway script from outside pressures of the studios (both film and gaming), and more. Now comes a turn in the latest iteration of Street Fighter's historic rival: Mortal Kombat 1.
This makes more sense than Street Fighter ever did, as creators of the original Mortal Kombat have admitted that the very character of Johnny Cage was modeled after JCVD's Frank Dux from Bloodsport. They wanted to cast him in the first game but he was already contractually committed to the Street Fighter project. That wrong has finally been put right as Van Damme is a playable skin for Jonny Cage. The skin is part of the Kombat Pack that also bundles in five new Kameo Fighters (fighting partners that help you in battle) and six new playable characters - Quan Chi, Ermac, Takeda Takahashi, Peacemaker, Omni-Man, and Homelander. The Kombat Pack is included in the Mortal Kombat 1 Premium Edition or Kollector’s Edition and is available at launch.
Mortal Kombat 1 launches September 19th for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and the Nintendo Switch. Pre-orders of the premium editions will grant early access on the 14th.
