PlayStation players looking to scratch their immersive RPG itch can look no further, as today Larian Studios has released Baldur’s Gate 3 for PS5. The turn-based RPG has taken the gaming world by storm in the last month, including being one of the highest-rated PC games of the year, not to mention of all-time. The PS5 version appears to be on a similar trajectory, currently sitting at a 97 on Metacritic.
BG3 on PS5 sets itself apart from the PC version by taking advantage of the DualSense controller’s feature set, which you can read about in full on the PlayStation Blog. For starters, the adaptive triggers are used in a clever way that allows you to peek at radial menus with a half-pull of the trigger, while pushing past the resistance point will lock the menu on screen. For a turn-based RPG, that sounds like it will be quite useful in the heat of battle. In addition, character movement handles like a traditional third-person game outside of combat, but there is also Cursor Mode, which enables a point-and-click control scheme if that is more your speed.
Another notable feature is the existence of cross save capabilities, meaning you can keep your progress when moving between PC and PS5 versions of the game. Xbox players your time is coming – an Xbox Series X|S version is coming later this year, although it will sacrifice split-screen co-op on Series S.
