Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2 is one of my most anticipated releases this year, so much so that I have been playing the original game in recent days to re-acquaint myself with the franchise. Today, over on the PlayStation Blog, the team at Arrowhead have shared some new gameplay details of what we can expect when we spread democracy later this year on PS5 – and PC in the future.

For starters, if you have been totally out of the loop, you should know up front that gone is the isometric camera and in is a third-person, over-the-shoulder perspective. Beyond the new aesthetic, Helldivers 2 sounds like it will play a lot like Helldivers 1, which, in my opinion, is a great thing. You’ll still be selecting and customizing your loadout of weapons and strategems before each mission. This is best done in co-operation with your teammates to make sure you have the right tools for the job, which will give you the best chance of survival against hordes of alien bugs. Some stategems like the AC-8 Autocannon require a team-assisted reload, which adds a bit more chaos to already hectic firefights.
One thing we don’t have confirmation of is if the witty player quips are back for the sequel. There’s nothing like mowing down a swarm of bugs while shouting “how about a cup of liber-tea?!”. We also still don’t have a release date for Helldivers 2, but hopefully not much longer now.
