Polish studio CD Projekt announced a multitude of new games today during a strategy presentation for investors. Three new Witcher games, a Cyberpunk sequel, and a brand new IP were all revealed, as well as major structural changes for the company.
Project Sirius is the first of the new Witcher titles and is being developed at Boston-based studio The Molasses Flood – the team behind The Flame in the Flood and Drake Hollow. Their Witcher project will feature both single-player and multiplayer gameplay, and it will target a broader audience according to CD Projekt, who acquired The Molasses Flood in October of 2021.
Another Witcher project, codenamed Polaris, will be the first of three games in the previously announced new Witcher saga. CD Projekt plans to publish all three titles within a six-year period beginning with the launch of Polaris. The next-gen upgrade for the final game in the original saga – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – is still on track to release by the end of this year according to the company.
The final Witcher project announced was Canis Majoris – a title said to be a “Witcher-themed release” developed on Unreal Engine 5 by an unannounced third-party studio which includes former Witcher series staff.
CD Projekt also revealed that a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is in the works, codenamed Project Orion, which will be led by a newly-established internal studio – CD Projekt Red North America – with offices in both Boston and Vancouver. The company just recently announced that Cyberpunk 2077 would get a first and last story expansion called Phantom Liberty sometime in 2023.
Moving beyond The Witcher and Cyberpunk franchises, CD Projekt is also creating their own original IP for the first time in the company’s history. Conceptual work on this third franchise – codenamed Hadar – began last year and is still very early in development.
As most major game companies are these days, CD Projekt is also looking beyond just video games to expand their franchises, as evidenced by the recent success of their Netflix animated series Cyberpunk: EDGERUNNERS. To that end, the company is looking to collaborate with more external partners to continue to expand their brands while their internal teams focus on making role-playing games.
