I'm a huge Star Trek fan, and I'm fully onboard with the recent Paramount+ driven resurgence the franchise has seen over the past couple of years. I'm watching all of the shows faithfully as they are released (despite the fact that the writing on Picard is some bottom-of-the-barrel nonsense), and enjoying seeing my favorite sci-fi world become fuller and richer with each passing year.
But over in the videogame space, Star Trek Online has been carrying the torch for well over a decade. STO constantly creates and releases major storylines, often featuring talent from the television and film releases to voice their characters in-game. There is an enormous wealth of content in Star Trek Online for those that are willing to mine for it - and as this latest trailer for new release Stormfall reveals, some of it is absolutely bonkers.
So right out of the gate there, I'm seeing Ilia Decker from Star Trek: The Motion Picture in full V-GER mode, I'm seeing a Borgified Janeway, I'm seeing Tilly from Star Trek Discovery in her Mirror Universe incarnation "Captain Killy", I'm seeing V-GER energy balls being flung at starships, and it's all just...a lot.
According to a recent press release, Stormfall continues STO's exploration of the Mirror Universe. Here's the official breakdown (prepare for a long paragraph):
"Stormfall begins as Captains arrive at a secured facility to rescue Ilia and she warns them that the Terran Empire is on the verge of summoning a powerful nemesis from their collective past. To secure her freedom and stop Terran forces led by Captain Killy (voiced by Mary Wiseman from Star Trek: Discovery), Captains must team up with two of their former adversaries, Marshal Painway Janeway (voiced by Kate Mulgrew from Star Trek: Voyager) and Admiral Leeta, (voiced by Chase Masterson from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine). On their journey, they will also enlist the help of an Andorian rebel named “Rae-Yeet,” who is voiced by Noah Averbach-Katz."
So yes, V-GER, Tilly, Janeway, and a poor, beleaguered Andorian. This release will consist of two episodes, but also comes with a Remastered Starfleet Tutorial (which will help onboard new kids into the game), a rebuild of a classic five-person instance, and a new special event. With content this crazy still being released, I kinda wish I had stuck with STO when I was playing it a decade back. I would love the chance to take on Captain Killy. The folks behind Star Trek Online clearly have access to a lot of cool toys, and damn it, they are gonna play with them.
