Having two small kids in the house, I pay special attention to game announcements for games that might appeal to the little ones. So I was pretty jazzed when I saw the teaser trailer for Disney Speedstorm, a new battle racing game based on Disney properties. Then I saw that the game was made by Gameloft, and while that didn't set off alarm bells with me, it certainly is interesting.
Gameloft has historically catered to the mobile audience, with games like Asphalt, Dragon Mania Legends, and Dungeon Hunter. These games aren't bad, per se, but they definitely exist in the free-to-play space, which means that I tend to check them out for a few minutes and then bail when they start hitting me up for cash. But with Disney Speedstorm, Gameloft appears to be moving into the PC and console space - though the game is definitely launching as a free-to-play title.
“Disney fans are in for a full throttle experience with the upcoming launch of the high-speed racing game Disney Speedstorm,” said Luigi Priore, VP, Disney & Pixar Games in a provided statement, so it seems like Disney is on board. "
Described as a hero-based combat racing game, Disney Speedstorm features Disney and Pixar characters "re-imagined as high-speed road warriors, with racetracks inspired by their unique worlds. An incredible lineup of racers will include Captain Jack Sparrow, Mulan, Mickey Mouse, Sulley, the Beast and more, suited-up and revving up for racing action. Upgrade each racer’s stats and make the most of their unique skills, which can impact the outcome of a single race and dramatically change the way to play!" Uh-huh. That does sound a little suspect, now that I think about it.
Still though, I'll give Disney Speedstorm a fair shot when it comes out. I just hope it has enough safety features that my five-year-old doesn't spend sixty bucks on speed gems (or whatever) trying to unlock Bruno from Encanto.
