Developer 1047 Games released their Portal arena shooter as an open beta on July 13, 2021. The massive influx of players turned out to be more than they had expected. Especially with the fact that there had been no formal advertisement for this beta release or the planned release on July 27, 2021. Going from 400 to 75 thousand concurrent players, and up to 2 million downloads forced the company to reevaluate the direction of the game and the company.
After meetings over the weekend with various advisors and colleagues of the development team, a deal was struck with Human Capital, a venture firm for engineers. Funding of 10 million was raised to further the Splitgate project so that it could move forward. Servers will be brought back up on the original planned release date, however Splitgate will stay in open beta, but with improvements to servers and quality of life for console players. There will also be three new maps dropping with the planned upgrade.
Going forward, 1047 Games is planning on building up their team as well as the game. CEO and Co-Founder Ian Proulx said in a live stream via Splitgate's Twitch channel that "two new engineers had been hired, and both would be on staff by mid week, with more staff to follow". Fans and players alike have a lot to look forward to with this game. A receptive development team, a solid game, and a player base that continues to grow. This could be the next big game of the year, but only time will tell. The latest updates and status can be found by following 1047 Games on Twitter.
