Horizon Forbidden West is the highly anticipated sequel to the PS4 exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn. Incidentally, I included Horizon Zero Dawn as one of my games of the generation in the GamingNexus collaborative favourite console games of the generation article. Today, Sony hosted a State of Play where they showed off 14 minutes of new gameplay footage captured on PS5 and boy does it look downright gorgeous.
I’m really digging the tropical environment with the white sand beaches and lush tropic vegetation surrounding a decrepit San Francisco. We also get to see Aloy dive into the depths of the ocean which really does look like a whole other world in itself. Oh, and you know the Haradrim from The Lord of the Rings that rode Oliphaunts (large creatures that resemble elephants) into battle? Well, there’s a robot version of those to contend with now too. The gameplay ends with a storm emerging and the message that a storm is coming; both literally and figuratively.
Horizon Forbidden West continues six months after the events of Horizon Zero Dawn. Aloy, a machine hunter, has travelled west to investigate a mysterious and deadly blight. In these uncharted lands, she will meet strange new tribes and encounter ever more deadly machines. Together with old friends and new companions, she must brave this dangerous frontier to find the answers she needs to save life on Earth.
Horizon Forbidden West is currently scheduled for release later this year but Guerrilla Games did sign off by saying “we don’t have an exact release date yet, but development is on track and we’ll have an update for you very soon.” When it does release, Horizon Forbidden West will come to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
