I don't mind saying that I'm pretty terrible at modern racing games. I come from the PS1 Need for Speed school of racing, where "braking" means "lightening up on the gas ever so slightly" and concepts like drifting were simply unheard of. I can't get used to racing games that actually want me to slow down around corners. Arcade all the way, y'all.
Which is why I'm so excited for Hot Wheels Unleashed. I'm not saying that it'll be easy, but I do believe it'll be tuned to be a bit more forgiving about sliding off the track (one of my favorite/least favorite modern racing practices). The homies at Mattel and Milestone yesterday dropped the third environment reveal, this time showing off the college tracks.
That just looks like fun, and I'll bet the word "torque" doesn't show up anywhere in the game. The College Campus will feature three areas - the library, the classroom, and the chemistry lab. You can build your own courses, and even stretch them between room through the hallway, which sounds crazy cool. I'm really looking forward to seeing more about the track-building mechanic. I'm wondering if you are going to have to pick individual pieces, of just lay down a long ribbon of track.
Either way, we'll find out more as we move closer to release. Hot Wheels Unleashed is scheduled for release on September 30, 2021 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One consoles, Nintendo Switch and PC.
