Werewolves Within may be the first feature film based on a VR game

Ubisoft has been dabbling with occasional forays into other mediums, with projects like the Assassin' Creed film (and this week's announcement of a Star Wars-like blow out of Assassin's Creed tie-ins) and the Rabbids cartoon floating occasionally down the cultural river, raising a bit of interest from gamers on the shore. But Uib has chosen and interesting path with its next project; the new Werewolves Within film may very will be the first feature based on a VR game. I know that I certainly can't think of any others. And with its fun horror/comedy tone, Werewolves may be the first film based on an Ubisoft property to fully cross over to general audiences. Heck, most people probably won't even realize that it's based on a game.

That fact might make this seem like an unusual choice, as the Werewolves Within franchise is much less known than other Ubisoft properties, but making a feature based on this game is actually a really fun idea. There are plenty of other games that share Werewolves Within's core mechanics. The entire game is about sitting in a circle with other inhabitants of a small town, trying to figure out who is a werewolf and who isn't. It's the tightest social deduction game I've ever played, and it will likely translate into a pretty fun film - a lighter version of John Carpenter's The Thing, where no one is sure who is human and who isn't. Take a look at today's teaser, and you can get a pretty good idea of the film's tone.

Not bad, right? And a few familiar faces are tucked in there, which ramps up the fun. Directed by Josh Ruben, Werewolves Within will be released in theaters June 25, 2021, and will also be available on demand July 2, 2021.
