What We're Playing: 2021 Comes After 2020 Edition

More On: What we're playing
Former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime once had to break the news to former U.S. presidential hopeful Kanye West that, no, Nintendo would not be helping Kanye make a video game. The Chinese billionaire CEO of Yoozoo Group, best known for its Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming game, died on Christmas following a suspected colleague's alleged poisoning plot. And The Washington Post reports on the subreddit r/outside, where 650,000 users imagine reality as "a free-to-play MMORPG with 7 billion+ active players.

So, what are you playing?

Thanks to the period of gifts and giving, I have a smorgasbord of games to get to and not enough time to play them all. The priority at the moment is Jedi: Fallen Order. Yes, I know. I'm only playing it now thanks to EA Play.
So far, the combat isn't gelling with me. I'm waiting for it to click. However, the environments and story are intriguing enough to have held my attention.

Another game on my waiting to play list is Doom Eternal. It's sitting on my PS4, begging for me to play it. Tempting me. Calling to me. Commanding me to rip and tear. Maybe I'll pause Fallen Order for a bit and slay some demons.

Or, and this is more likely, I'll be tired after work and default to Destiny 2 and mindlessly grind something out.

Oh, to be a gamer with more games than time. Woe is me. Maybe riding out the transition to the new year while shooting or slicing something will be the best use of my time...

I'm off from work this week, so—along with a lot of the rest of the GN posse—I'm diving headfirst into Red Dead Online. At five bucks on PlayStation, it seemed like the perfect game to relax and zone out to while we are in the post-holiday quiet period, as far as video game releases go. While I've been having a fun time diving in with my son and his friends, running around and causing an old-fashioned ruckus in the middle of town, I'm also having a great time with the Trader career path. This career, which I haven't found entirely lucrative yet, has me wandering the quiet snowy tundra on my horse, Nacho Cheese, hunting and skinning animals to be processed back in my camp. It's a nice loop that can take hours of my day—which is just about perfect for this long, cold winter break.

I've also been playing Override 2: Super Mech League for review. I expect that review will be live by the time you are reading this, so maybe consider circling back around and checking it out. Override is a ton of fun, especially with friends.

This isn't how I thought I'd ring in the New Year, but a bunch of us are about to have made the two-year-old Red Dead Online one of the best-selling video games of 2020. Five dollars for that much online gold bar grind with your armchair gang? Tonight we're gonna posse like it's 1899.

But if I can't catch up to Gaming Nexus's early-to-bed-early-to-rise East Coast crew (I'm on the other end of the ol' Oregon Trail), then Haven will keep me cozy. You ever have a game that makes you happy to turn it off and simply go to bed with your wife rather than have her trudge off to sleep on her own? Haven will do that. It'll remind you of just how good of a partner you've got next to you.

I'm going to play some games I haven't spent much time on for the next week. First, I installed Darkest Dungeon and Shadowrun Returns. I've been looking to get into some good turn-based games and those two seem like two good ones to get some time in for the next week or so. Of course, I couldn't leave out Civilization VI and, I think with me having time off from work this coming week, I'll finally be able to sit down and do the one-more-turn dance with this game.

Finally, to keep in shape while staying indoors, I'm going through multiple sessions of BoxVR. I've finally found a good VR game to keep me moving, and I saw you could build your own playlist of songs to VR box to and that's exactly what I'm going to do.
