Yup, I'm as surprised as many longstanding Serious Sam fans, but the new game, Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass, has a much greater emphasis on story than any of the previous entries. What's also odd is that this game is a prequel to all the others, detailing the early days of Mental's invasion of Earth, when Sam "Serious" Stone was just another kooky member of a spec ops squad consisting entirely of loose cannon goofballs.
I've been chewing my way through the game for my review and it is a bit awkward to have so much dialogue and banter, especially considering--spoiler alert--most of these characters bite the dust about 10 minutes into Serious Sam 3: BFE. Then again time travel is a big part of the series, so maybe Jones, Kenny, Hellfire et al will get retconned to fight another day? Serious Sam 4 arrives September 24th on Steam and Stadia.
