Devolver gave us a small burning taste of Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass at their Devolver Direct. It's a lot briefer than I would prefer but, well, it looks like Serious Sam. Waves upon waves of monsters that you cut down with ludicrous overkill weapons. The story is yet another prequel, as they fill out more of Sam "Serious" Stone's backstory. Apparently he used to be a space explorer? Huh what? I thought he was just a special forces dude who answered the call when Mental invaded Earth. Plot quibbles aside, I'm glad we're getting a wider variety of locales this time: tundra, mountains, and a freaking volcano are a nice change from, you know, ancient Egypt yet again.
I might be in the minority but I legitimately enjoyed Serious Sam 3: BFE when it launched back in 2011. It had some pacing issues and technical problems but I remember the wanton violence and grinding difficulty were very refreshing amidst the annual Call of Duty releases. It feels like Croteam has been taking forever on the sequel though. At least we don't have to wait much longer; the Steam page says Serious Sam 4 is set for an August release window.
