Larian Studios showed off all-new live gameplay today for their upcoming Baldur's Gate 3. Baldur's Gate [GN score 9 out of 10] is revered as a pinnacle of late '90s RPG writing and design. Suffice it to say, a huge contingent of Gen X'ers have got their eyes on the development of this new one, especially since it's being put together by Larian, makers of Divinity: Original Sin 2, which is similarly revered as a pinnacle of late 2010's RPG writing and design.
High hopes.
CEO of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, by all accounts a barely contained ball of 20-sided dice—and an all-around good guy—has the controls during this gameplay showcase. He points out right away that the narrative text is now all written in present tense. For whatever reason, a vocal contingent of viewers weren't gelling with the past-tense writing. So, even though early access hasn't even started yet, Larian is listening, ears wide open, to the criticisms of its fans. Hopefully Larian knows when to disregard crowd-sourced advice, too, because it'd be a crying shame if the Internet manages to sand off all the edges to Baldur's Gate 3 until there's none of Larian's edge left.
Baldur's Gate 3 enters early access sometime in Fall 2020. Which reminds me, I have to keep the ball rolling with my Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus tabletop RPG group.
Thanks, IGN.
