After the technical introduction to the PlayStation 5 hardware and the reveal of the DualSense 4 controller, Sony appears to finally be getting to the meat of a new console announcement — the games.
In an official Sony blog post today, President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan outlined an upcoming digital showcase intended to feature a number of the titles coming to the PlayStation 5 when it releases this holiday season. The showcase will take place on June 4th at 1 PM PDT. According to Ryan, it will run approximately an hour and will be broadcast on both Twitch and YouTube.
This presentation is a welcome addition, especially with how atypical the next-gen console announcements have been from both Microsoft and Sony. Microsoft's games showcase earlier in May was a mixed bag, with many noting the distinct lack of actual gameplay in most of the presentation. Ryan also makes no indication in the post as to what types of games we'll see in the showcase, particularly whether they'll be first or third-party titles. The only thing that's certain is that we won't be getting all the answers, with Ryan saying in the blog post, "rest assured, after next week’s showcase, we will still have much to share with you."
