It's hard to believe that it's been 3 years since No Man's Sky made its shaky, controversial launch. The game has been incrementally improved by developer Hello Games in the years hence, and today brings the biggest overhaul so far. No Man's Sky Beyond significantly expands the multiplayer mode with a social hub and increased server capacity (8 players on consoles, 32 on PC). Beyond also adds full VR support and expands a lot of the existing gameplay mechanics, with numerous quality of life updates as well.
I still don't expect No Man's Sky to be any less of a grindy, "mowing the lawn in space" survival game but I might drop back in to sample the new features. It's been over a year since I touched the thing and I've honestly had more fun replaying Skyrim, but as the old saying goes, for the kind of people who like this sort of thing well it's just the sort of thing they will like.
No Man's Sky Beyond is a free DLC update for all existing owners of the game on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. The full details and patch notes are here.
