The Outer Worlds, a single-player role-playing game from Obsidian Entertainment (Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas), got a launch date during today's Microsoft presentation at E3. The Outer Worlds launches October 25, 2019. That's only 4.5 months away.
This official E3 trailer opens up on a wonderfully trashcan-looking ship, with an appropriately bubble-looking little transport ship zooming out of it. The next shot is down on the surface of some green, watery world with ship carcasses rotting away on the shore like beached whales. The shimmer and shine of corporate advertisements is matched only by the bioluminesence of the alien flora. On the colony of Halcyon, located on one of Jupiter's 79 moons it looks like, marketing propaganda is in full effect. Commercial-calm voices explain how "scheduled scarcity is a premium feature of colonial life" (ha!) and how "the corporate model is the oldest and most efficient structure history has ever shown us" (haha!) Corporate overlords are great, aren't they?
Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.
But hey, now you're here. You're challenging the corporate law and order around here. Looks like guns are involved. Maybe even a shrink ray? And there are going to be plenty of privately funded military corporations and indigenous species ready to rack up your score. You could be a villain or a hero to the colonists of Halcyon. You have a choice.
The Outer Worlds launches on October 25. It'll be on PS4, Xbox One, and as a one-year exclusive in the Windows Store and Epic Games Store. Every other store on PC will wait a year before selling it.
