In what has become typical of Bethesda in recent history, they started out with a nice attempt to give away PC copies of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind to their users as a 25th Anniversary gift. However, like many other things the company has done lately, it quickly has evolved into a trainwreck.
What should have been an easy giveaway went south as multiple issues are being reported by users and GN Staffers alike. The main issue seems to be that no one can log into the Bethesda.net site to claim the free game. If you are successful, and do not get logged out (and then unable to log back in) when clicking a link, then the code is reported as not working. If you get past THAT issue, then the latest is that the game wont download in the Launcher, but your one-time use code has been used up.
It appears after a significant amount of negative feedback on Twitter, Bethesda Support is looking into the issue. However it seems pretty clear that their web services looks to be unable to handle the surge in traffic from however many of the 778K Elder Scrolls twitter followers that all went to the site at once to get the free game.
Once they get the issues fixed, then you will be able to head over to the official site to grab your copy before the end of the day. Ideally, if this goes on too long, the offer will be extended, but who knows. Once it is back online and tested as working, we will update the post.
[UPDATE: Dan] While there has not been an official announcement on the Bethesda Support Twitter yet, I was able to finally redeem the code on Bethesda.net and then download and install Morrowind: GotY edition through the launcher.
[UPDATE #2: Dan] And there is the official announcement form Bethesda Support on twitter that Morrowind is yours to get.
