The closeout surprise of today's Nintendo Direct is a full on remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, in HD for Switch. The game sports a new art style and according to Nintendo, reworked gameplay and several other surprises. It's slated to come out sometime this year.
To be honest, I'm both excited and a bit disappointed by this. Link's Awakening is considered by many fans to be the best 2D Zelda game, even beating out A Link to the Past. It's a favorite of mine too, but I didn't necessarily want it remade; the original is eminently playable and I can revisit it any time on my 3DS. Honestly I would have preferred a true sequel, like A Link Between Worlds. I'm looking forward to exploring this remake, whenever Nintendo gets around to releasing it, but if Nintendo really wanted to put an HD remake of a Game Boy title on Switch, I wish they would have just ported Metroid: Samus Returns (GN score 9.5).
