Yes, I'm still mad about the Virtual Console getting replaced with Nintendo's online subscription service. No, I will not change my mind that unlocking a few NES games a month is kind of insulting. That's why I'm so happy to hear that Sega is releasing the Genesis Classics Collection for Switch. This retro compilation has over 50 classic Sega Genesis titles, including Revenge of Shinobi, Space Harrier 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog. It's all wrapped up in the same totally radical 90s bedroom hub menu that the collection launched with on Steam.
So while Nintendo is forcing people to pay $20 a year to access a monthly trickle of NES games like Ice Climber and Tecmo Bowl--games that magically vanish if you fail to re-up your subscription--Sega lets me pay a flat one-time fee and play 50 Genesis games on my Switch forever. Did I mention this compilation includes three Phantasy Star games? Genesis Classics Collection heads to Switch on December 7th, with both a physical and digital release. Pricing has not been announced, but the collection runs roughly $30 on other platforms.
