I'm not going to hit you with too much preamble here. But Generation Zero from Avalanche Studios (Just Cause, Mad Max) just went into closed beta, opening the doors for me to look at the Swedish chic 1980's first-person robot shooter. This first video is somewhere around 30 minutes of gameplay, where I take a generally cautious pace and explore a small patch of ground around a safe house, scavenging for guns, ammo, first-aid kits, and radios.
You'll have to pardon me, in the video I thought that the radios were an affectation I could carry around on my shoulder like a boombox. Because that's what we did in the '80s. But I've come to realize (okay, okay, I finally read the description in the inventory menu) that they're a one-time-use distracting noise bomb to throw off the robots' scent. Oh, also I grouse about not being able to load my gun. But it appears the developers may have thrown a lot of ammo at beta players early on...earlier than the tutorial was prepared to let you start loading your gun.
This video doesn't have any firefights in it. Look for my next video to have plenty more of that. This one is only exciting if you're curious about the menus and their inventory management, skill trees, and the overhead map. And if you are cool with taking a chill pace at exploring a few residential interiors, wood sheds, boat sheds, and grassy fields.
