Stardock Games has released a brand-new gameplay trailer for their newest title Star Control: Origins. The trailer underscores the scope and depth of the universe that players will be exposed to, and appears to contain all the makings of a classic sci-fi adventure; space pirates and charming aliens included.
The universe of Star Control: Origins encompasses dimensions that are 130x130 light years in size, allowing the player to explore hundreds of solar systems and thousands of planets. With each planet possessing unique and exotic qualities. If you are an enthusiast of NASA, Asteroids, or LEGO Rock Raiders it is likely that this trailer will check all the boxes for any space exploration enthusiast.
The space battles appear engaging and reminiscent of how the player's ship in Atari's Asteroids would drift through space allowing the player to fire whilst backpedaling away from bullets and hazards- all within close proximity..
The voice acting features work by Adam Baldwin from the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day, and the hit, but short lived, television series Firefly. Adding a fun layer of sci-fi history to the game's voice acting cast.
By the end of the trailer it is clear that humanity is in over its head and there is an underlying narrative that is only alluded to in the trailer. What fully awaits the player remains to be seen, but it is certain that this trailer for Star Control: Origins shows promise and ambition in what the game seeks to achieve, and what many sci-fi games have attempted, and that is to make the player the pilot of their own intergalactic space odyssey.
Pun aside, I am excited to see how this final product is received by audiences. At the risk of overselling, but from what I have gathered from the game's story, I can only make a light comparison to both the book and game Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire because of certain character and story similarities. Check out the trailer below and let me know what you think in the comments section.
Star Control: Origins is set to be released September 20th 2018 on Steam.
