XREAL Games reached out to inform us of a new title heading our way in the next couple of months. Our look at their first release, A-Tech Cybernetic, which we thought had fairly well developed gun mechanics and workable mobility controls, was surrounded by a not very compelling story line and weak enemies. The zombies were, and this could very well be a defining trait of zombies, incredibly dim. Killing them was akin to sawing logs. That only somewhat dampened the experience - good shooting is good shooting.
With Zero Caliber VR, XREAL has disengaged with zombies and replaced them with the Tlalokii, a cult that has formed around Tlaloc, who they believe to be an Aztec god. The setting is a dystopian United States (as if there is any other kind in games these days - looking at you Far Cry 5), but that is secondary to the promise of even better gun handling and shooting mechanics, along with a plethora of attachments and variations to customize our arsenal.
The early access is set to release on Sept. 13 on the Steam and Oculus stores, but here's a little secret: wake up Siri and have him/her remind you to grab the free demo on Aug. 5th. You can bet your last dystopian dollar that we will be checking it out.
