At $60 for a six-month subscription, Gamestop is about to turn itself into a Blockbuster for video game rentals. Crunch time is the Dark Souls of video game development—it's destroying the people that make them. And Russian movie director Nikita Ordynskiy turned Papers, Please into Papers, Please: The Short Film.
What are you playing this weekend?

In defiance of the season shifting from Spooky to Festive, I'm continuing my playthrough of Doom 64. Now I love me some Doom 3, but I'll be honest, Doom 64 is a more authentic Doom 3 than the actual Doom 3 was. It feels like an actual sequel to Doom 2 instead of a reboot.
I might also pick up Super Mario Odyssey now that the hype has died down a bit. Plus the fiancee is dropping a lot of hints about it. And in a What Are You Playing bonus round, I'll also be attending the Zelda Symphony of the Goddesses at the Ohio Theater here in town. I'm interested to see how they incorporate Breath of the Wild's piano-heavy pieces into the mix.

After months of telling myself, "No, I don't really need this game," I finally caved and bought RiME. I'm a sucker for puzzle games like this (looking at you, Journey, Human Fall Flat, and Portal) and honestly don't know why I put it off for so long. I purposefully haven't read any reviews and I know it probably won't live up to my hype, but that's only because I built it up so much over the months before and after its launch. Will keep you updated.

As a byproduct of having borrowed my son-in-law's PS4 to test drive Gran Turismo Sport and leaving behind my T500RS racing wheel, he too gave it a try. That was enough to sell him on Project CARS 2, so now I'm tutoring him on the subtleties of road racing, classic real-world tracks (started him at Watkins Glen, gave him Bathurst as a homework assignment), and how to lobby your spouse for permission to buy a VR headset. I'm helping him with the latter endeavor by giving my daughter as much Robo Recall time as she can handle.
While I still spend a lot of time in Heliborne, I'm having to carve out some hours to get better acquainted with OGRE, by which I mean finding better, more efficient ways to lose. I've also started stepping back into VR with a new western-themed shooter called Guns'n'Stories: Bulletproof VR to the degree my nerves can handle it. VR has a tendency to be a little overwhelming at times. It offsets OGRE perfectly: OGRE is the story of many of my players attempting to defeat one big opponent, while Bulletproof is the story of hordes of opponents trying to defeat me. Odd, and more than a little disconcerting, how I seem to consistently lose in both scenarios.

I have been ignoring Megaton Rainfall since taking it out for a quick spin on release day, so I will probably be digging back into that in earnest this weekend. I also finally got around to downloading Infamous Second Son after Sony gave it to Plus users last month, and I'm kind of into it. My on-again-off-again love affair with Plants vs. Zombies Heroes on mobile has heated up again lately, so I may end up bailing on everything and just burning a bunch of time on that.

This weekend I will be skulking around Middle Earth/Egypt in Shadow of War/Assassin's Creed Origins. I still haven't figured out which game I like more, but I'm digging both of them. I might check out Call of Duty: WWII this weekend if the stars align, but that will be about it, other than a bit of Destiny 2.

With the Creation Club's Survival Mode and the Campfire–Complete Camping System mod, I'm in Skyrim heaven again. I've spent upwards of a thousand hours in vanilla Skyrim over the years. I didn't think anything could refresh the experience. But the mod life has. I've turned the land of the Nords into Cabela's Big Game Hunter with an REI season pass. Forget dragon armor. Fur is what's going to save your life. Craft all the healing potions you want. They won't help you when you're literally dying for a plate of charred skeever meat. Nothing's been more fun than having the opportunity to Fus Ro Die of exposure to the cold, contracting food poisoning, and taking damage from over encumbrance when all I need is a couple more pieces of firewood to get this campfire going. I'm not answering the call to High Hrothgar. I'm answering the Call of the Wild.

My PS4 is sold, along with both my video cars, and the rest of my life is packed up en route back to the U.S. and A. The only gaming I’ll be seeing until Black Friday rolls around and replacements bought will be on my iPad. So, most of that time will be spent on Fire Emblem Heroes. I’ve been at that one as a time waster for some time now, and am far enough along that I have 200,000 feathers sitting around my barracks of over 300 heroes (mostly lover star duplicates) that it’s time I really sit down with skill I here tender and create my 5 star super team(s). Add to that there are a ton of mobile games just sitting on this hard ride untouched like Banner Saga, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Tales from the Borderlands; it’s high time I dug into those as well.

What am I playing? Fallout: New Vegas, baby. Okay, but seriously, I have fallen in love with this game again. Its writing, characters, difficulty. I'm on hardcore mode because I'm just that good at things. I can play this forever.

I have unfortunately had to put my '69 Roadrunner in the garage for the winter, so I am left to driving electronically in Forzaland. The latest update gives VIP members the deserved +100% CR for each race, which I am putting to very good use. I have also concluded that the "Free Play" section is the easiest way to get your money's worth out of the loot crates as extending races make for giant payouts.
I have also decided to get the new South Park: The Fractured But Whole game in lieu of COD WWII, and Destiny 2. Call me a (insert Cartman voice here) "fat piece of crap" if you want, but I have opted for ridiculous humor vs. gun battles for the time being.
