I'm convinced that Firaxis just has a bunch of folks, sitting around a table, thinking up ways—right now—to make XCOM 2 players miserable. The upcoming XCOM 2: War of the Chosen expansion launches soon, and the new video, above, is a look at three new enemy types employed by your primary enemy, ADVENT.
There's the Purifier. And oh goody, they've got flamethrowers. They create sweeping arcs of up-close, ongoing damage, and can toss incendiary grenades. Don't send in your Ranger for close quarters combat either: there's a chance the Purifier will explode upon death.
The Priest brings back the ADVENT's old mind-trick ability to bolster their own allies on the field. Sucks for you, unless you can pick off the Priest doing the allied mind control, because it kills the priest and the unit they were buffing.
Then the Spectre. This enemy unit looks like a real pain in the neck. You can't hit it when it transforms itself into smoke, your first overwatch shot automatically misses it, it transforms one of your own soldiers into a copy of the Spectre, which (of course!) knocks out your soldier, and their "Horror" ability damages you and heals them.
See what I'm talking about? Firaxis is just sitting around a big ol' boardroom table, brainstorming up ways to ruin your day.
Thank you sir, may I have another?
XCOM 2: War of the Chosen launches August 29 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It requires XCOM 2 to play.
