It's been 14 years since the last single player MechWarrior game, but we're going to get a new in two years. At this year's Mech_Con, Piranha Games took to the stage to show off a very early version of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries uses the Unreal Engine, a departure from Piranha's multiplayer only MechWarrior Online, which uses the CryEngine. It's being built by a team that's separate from the online game as well.
As a rookie pilot, you're thrown into the Third Succession War in 3015. Like the older Mercenaries, you'll earn C-bills by taking on contracts and salvaging your kills on the battle field to either upgrade your mech or sell for profit.
It's good to see a single player game come out once again, but I really hope they add a co-op component into it. As my review of MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries back in 2002 said, the one thing missing from Microsoft's version was playing with friends. Here's hoping Piranha will let us do that for the campaign.
Oh, and give me VR support please.
We got a while to go before the game does come out and many details can change, but here's an early look at how it's coming along. But one thing that's got some MechWarrior fans a little riled up is that the demo has a Raven, a mech that doesn't go into production until 3024. It's OK folks. It's just a pre-alpha demo.
