There are cool things happening in Mafia III. For a game titled "Mafia," heading into 1968 New Orleans with a black Vietnam veteran is a bold vision for a protagonist taking on the Italian mob.
Also cool is Ice Cube and DJ Shadow teaming up for an original track (see video below) made specifically for this Mafia III "Revenge" trailer. The track is called "Nobody Wants to Die." Sample lyric: "I keep my mind on my money, I keep my hand on my gunny // Don't get to playin' with sonny, unless you Playboy Bunny."
Which, okay, for starters, sorry, but this is a throwaway verse, even coming from a guy that puts more effort into writing comedy than gangster rap. But Ice Cube's pillow-soft delivery doesn't help either. And after you get past the gospel choir hook by DJ Shadow (which says, "Everybody wants to go to Heaven // But nobody (nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody) // Ah nobody wants to die") — after you get past that churchy hook, then the instrumental is completely forgettable, too.
After enjoying the anachronistically cool idea of Cube and Shadow soundtracking a late-'60s song together, then the laziness of "Nobody Wants to Die" sets in quickly. Poor effort, fellas. Good to see your names involved. But poor effort.
Mafia III (sans "Nobody Wants to Die") launches October 7 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
