It's been a long time coming, but it looks as though Square Enix is finally moving towards the eventual closure of their first MMO, Final Fantasy XI.
Square Enix officially closed support for the 15-year-old MMO (Yes, it's actually that old) on the two previous generation systems, but will keep the game running on PC as there are still plenty of active players still going through the world of Vana'diel.
I played FFXI on all three platforms, starting off on PS2 and eventually moving to Xbox 360's HD version before settling in on PC once I had a strong enough system to run it. Off and on, I enjoyed the MMO until 2008 before moving on to another MMO, Perfect World International to enjoy open world PVP. FFXI has a fiercely loyal audience that still enjoys the grouping aspect of the game and the beautiful world that Square Enix brought to life. At a time where World of Warcraft was king because of its simplicity and easy of leveling, FFXI was a far superior world graphically but far more difficult to level in. I will never forget the first time I made that suicidal run to Jeuno and being blown away by how gorgeous it was.
Square Enix has not commented on how much longer the game will run on PC, given that Final Fantasy XIV has exploded in popularity and become one of the best MMOs ever released.
