Star Fox Zero is a little over a month away, and Nintendo's Japanese channel has just posted the opening cinematic for the Platinum Games-developed title. Naturally it's narrated in Japanese, but as expected it looks like the plot is basically a remake/reboot of Star Fox 64.
I'm not sure how to feel about this. It's the third time the Star Fox series has been rebooted. True, the Star Fox canon was getting a bit convoluted after the last entry, 2006's Star Fox Command on the DS, which had nine endings. That said, Command introduced a ton of cool side characters and each one had their own unique space fighter craft. I've never been an avid follower of the Star Fox canon; I haven't read all the manga or anything, I've just played the games so my knowledge is a bit sketchy. But it will be a little weird to play a game without Panther Caroso, Peppy's daughter Lucy, or of course Krystal, Fox's girlfriend controversially added by Rare way back in Star Fox Adventures.
It's also a bit strange that this reboot essentially removes most of the female supporting characters from Star Fox. But who knows? Maybe they'll be reviving long-lost characters from the cancelled Star Fox 2, like Mia Lynx, Faye the poodle and maybe even Fara Phoenix from the old Nintendo Power comics.
