Yesterday was the day you could pre-order an HTC Vive for $799. The Vive was my favorite thing to see at CES this year and after coming out of the demo, I decided to order one over the Oculus Rift.
When the pre-orders started yesterday at 10AM EST, I was expecting the website to be down just like it was for the Oculus Rift. Not so as I was able to log right in and place my order. But how many were ordered yesterday?
Shen Ye of HTC tweeted out that there were over 15,000 units pre-ordered in the first 10 minutes of the site going live. That's pretty good for a piece of tech that's not yet proven and one that's pretty expensive to boot. Oculus hasn't shared any sort of numbers yet, so it's hard to gauge how successful these pre-orders for VR HMDs have been.
April is the month they will ship for those who pre-ordered the Vive early yesterday. Right now, any pre-orders will ship in May so there's going to be a little bit of a wait time to get your unit unless you find one in stores or on eBay.
I'm pretty excited to get mine and can't wait to try out some of the games that come with it as well as some in my current collection.
