We all know the score with video game movies, and just how low that score is. When the two Tomb Raider movies with Angelina Jolie are considered by many to be the best video game movies ever made, you know it's a genre that's in trouble. However, the Tomb Raider reboot might have a shot. With the recent Warcraft movie trailer looking really good, and the recent Tomb Raider video game reboot redefining the character and separating her away from the campy action heroine she was before, the stars seem to be aligning for a (finally) good video game movie.
Previously, big names like Kathryn Bigelow and . . . other names like Catherine Hardwicke had been circulating for the director slot. Now it looks like Norwegian director Roar Uthaug, known for Norwegian movie The Wave, has taken the chair. The screenwriting also appears to have switched hands from Evan Daugherty, who wrote the screenplay for Divergent, to Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who is currently writing the screenplay for Transformers 5.
The direction is in good hands, but the screenplay still threatens to be uninteresting popcorn action-fluff. Either way, it's looking more and more like this movie is going to happen, and we'll get to decide how bad or good it is for ourselves after seeing it. Here's hoping hope it's as good as the most recent Tomb Raider games.
