Yesterday's Nintendo Direct was packed with some much needed news after a troubling summer and fall drought. We finally have a release date and a solid look at the updated Star Fox Zero from Platinum Games. This new trailer details all the different vehicles while reintroducing the Star Fox team.
I've gotta be honest, I'm still not feeling it. From the bad press about the controls to the conspicuous delay this game just feels off to me. I'm not happy that they've basically rebooted the story again because that means we're probably still fighting Andross. I'm also not in love with the retro, chunky N64 art style they've used for all the vehicles. I know they're going for nostalgia but I miss the elegant, mecha-style Arwings from Star Fox Assault that looked like dancers. Heck I would've preferred the clean, minimalist lines of the SNES graphics.
I love Platinum Games and they always do good work but I can't shake the feeling that Star Fox Zero still feels forced, rushed and half-baked. I hope I'm wrong about the game when it finally hits shelves on April 21st next year.
