The turbulence regarding Silent Hills, P.T. and Hideo Kojima's recent parting has provided a pretty rough patch in gaming recently. Now, Guillermo del Toro has said that he won't make another game, at least not directly.
Calling himself the "albatross of video games," del Toro had the following to say, in an interview with Shacknews: "I joined THQ, and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami. I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else's life, I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I'll join someone and his house will explode, or something." Later on, he added "if I join another video game, World War III will start."
As anyone who has seen any of his films would know, this is sad news for video games in general. Del Toro is an undeniably and incredibly talented man, and the video game medium seems perfect for his style of direction and story telling.
Thankfully, he did express openness to participating, albeit in a smaller way, in prospective games based on his movies. “I can be creative about it, and I can be educated about it, and talk about it in a way that helps them make the video game. But no - I can't."
Hopefully, he will reconsider. Such an artist is always welcome.
