Rockstar has an ear for music. (Haha, I like to kick things off with an understatement, once in awhile.) As far as video games are concerned, no one makes an event out of soundtracks like the Grand Theft Auto V developer. And, within recent memory, I can't think of another game that's had its console-to-PC conversion more closely watched than GTA V.
Part of that PC conversion—and practical rebirth—is the introduction of a brand new in-game radio station, The Lab FM, hosted by rapper/producers The Alchemist and Oh No. The station features lyrical monsters like E-40 and Killer Mike, gangsta rap godfather MC Eiht, and new bloods like A$AP Ferg and Earl Sweatshirt.
I'll admit, some of the musical selections benefit from what I call the "GTA Effect," where otherwise decent or just OK songs sound and feel better when taken in a GTA context. One of my favorites on the new Lab FM, however, is "Speedline Miracle Masterpiece" by Tunde Adebimpe (of TV on the Radio fame) and featuring Sal P and Sinkane.
My eyebrows knit together a little bit at the syrupy, synthetic horn intro, but "Speedline Miracle Masterpiece" is one of the nicest tracks in years from the sometimes-overrated Mr. TV on the Radio.
