The battle for gaming engine dominance continues and Epic has fired another shot at Unity. Yesterday, Epic made it so that you don't have to pay a subscription fee to use all the tools available for Unreal Engine. That's right, you can download it now and use it to make your own game without having to put any money down.
All Epic asks is that if you make over $3000 in a quarter, you give them 5%. You can still purchase assets to use with your project, but the initial cost to develop games for small shops have now gone down significantly.
Unreal engine is a pretty impressive engine that powers many great games. I can't wait to see what folks do with it now that it's free to use.
