IGN did indeed have a reveal for Mortal Kombat X today, and they revealed that Reptile will be returning in Mortal Kombat X. We didn't get to learn about his variations but we did get to see his moveset where he retains most of his acid spitting moves from previous games. He also appears to have a new move where he holds and opponent up in the air via his tongue and can attack them from there. Of course we also got a glimpse at this incredibly brutal X-Ray move and Fatality.
So that was one new character revealed this week and remember that another one will be revealed this Thursday on Netherealms live stream on Twitch.
Okay, real talk. I have held this in for sometime but I feel as if I have to let it out. I am one of the biggest Mortal Kombat fanatics you will ever meet. Mortal Kombat is THE reason I am the gamer I am today. It was the first videogame I played back when I was only five or six years old that I became attached to, that I was obsessed with. Mortal Kombat is a huge part of my life and when MKX was announced back at E3 I was psyched. Here we are, two and a half months from its release and you know what. All my hype for this game is gone. You know why? In my opinion, this roster sucks.
The one thing that I love about Mortal Kombat as opposed to other fighting games is how Mortal Kombat has been able to evolve over time. Every new Mortal Kombat game feels new and fresh. The one thing that I always loved about new Mortal Kombat games is seeing all of the new characters that would join the roster. From Mortal Kombat 1 all the way to Deception, Mortal Kombat has found a way to bring back a bunch of the old favorites, while bringing new characters into the mix as well.
After the disappointment that was Armageddon, Ed Boon announced that the next MK would be brand new with more new characters than ever before. Then we got MK vs. DC. Mortal Kombat 9 was absolutely needed to reboot the franchise and reassure fans that the series was indeed back and better than ever but Mortal Kombat X was supposed to be all new. I was so excited to see that we are finally getting new characters when they announced Cassie Cage, D'Vorah and others at E3. That was it. They haven't revealed any more new characters since E3 and that is the one thing that I want to see the most. I don't care about Kano, Reptile, Kung Lao or Kitana anymore. I understand that there are characters you have to have in the game like Scorpion, Sub Zero and Raiden... but Reptile? Really?
I am also disappointed that all of the new characters post Mortal Kombat 3 are getting the shaft. The reason why people aren't fans of the PS2 era characters is cause they show up once and are never seen again. This would have been the perfect game to give characters like Frost, Mavado, Nitara, Hotaru, Kira, Jerek, Kai and others another chance. It could have been their reboot as well. The way the roster reveals are going however, it seems like Netherealm is playing it safe, and I am not a fan of it at all.
