Mario Maker was a curious surprise at E3 earlier this year, but the latest trailer from The Game Awards has made it a must-have title for me. The trailer shows off how you can swap between multiple classic art and gameplay styles, and edit your levels on the fly. The editor also allows things that haven't show up on classic mario games, like having Bullet Bill cannons shoot coins instead. I really liked the stage editor in the new Super Smash Bros on Wii U, and I'm excited that Nintendo seems to be embracing this emergent style of gameplay. Some of the levels in the trailer could give some of the most sadistic Mario ROM hacks a run for their money!
Mario Maker is on track for a 2015 release, to coincide with Super Mario Bros 30th anniversary. Now, if they'd only announce a Metroid Maker...
