In a video interview last Friday with Game Informer, two of the developers behind Just Cause 3 talked about where they were going with the game. Their comments were amazingly frank and honest, and they sound like they know exactly what Just Cause is and should be, which is very exciting.
One of the things they talked about was that because Just Cause 2 was already massive (1,035.55 square kilometers to be precise), they aren't trying to go bigger, but instead make the world denser. I don't think there could be better news for Just Cause 3 than that. I love Just Cause 2, but it was largely empty, and you could feel it. He mentions that Just Cause 3 will also have tunnels and caves, and that it doesn't all take place on the surface. I feel sure that we still can expect a massive overworld, but there's definitely enough there that some trimming won't hurt.
Something else that stood out to me was one of the developers saying that Just Cause 2 had a great story, but they did a terrible job presenting it to the players, and acknowledged that the majority of the game's playerbase never finished the story missions. He reassured us that Just Cause 3 is still a sandbox game first and foremost, but that they are trying to make the story more interesting and get more people to play through it.
The last thing I want to mention is what they said about destruction. The example one of the developers gave was saying that if you are being chased by a convoy, you can blow up the entire bridge that they are crossing and watch them all tumble and crumble to their deaths. He said they are aiming for that level of destruction, not just blowing up a wall with a grenade.
You should watch the video, I linked it above. I think we have something great coming our way.
