Earlier today, Nintendo released a Super Smash Bros. for Wii U-centric Nintendo Direct video. You can watch the whole video here, but if you want to save yourself from hearing Xander Mobus feign excitement about your Wii U's internet connection I'll give you a brief rundown of the important stuff:
The biggest part of the announcement is that there's going to be a special mode that lets up to eight people play at the same time. You'll only be able to do this on specific stages that are only on the Wii U version of the game. You know, since they'll have to be embiggened to accommodate the extra fighters. They showed a few of the levels that have some extra dangers and mechanics thrown in. First there's The Great Cave Offensive from Kirby Superstar- instead of hitting each other off the stage, if you hit one of the many lava pools while you're health is over 100%, it's an instant KO. The one I'm really excited about it Jungle Hijinx from Donkey Kong Country- the level is split into two layers that are connected by explosion barrels so the fighters can freely hop between fighting in the foreground and the background.
Also, Metalface and Ridley will show up as bosses for all of the combatants to team up against. Ridley will join forces with the player who deals him the most damage, and whoever manages to knock him out earns an extra point.
Smash Run will be exclusive to the 3DS version of the game, but the Wii U version will have the Smash Tour, which is essentially a board game where you collect fighters, power ups, and intermittently face off against each other until the final showdown where they use everything they've got against each other.
There will be a Special Orders mode where you perform challenges set for you by Master Hand and Crazy Hand. You only get one chance to complete these, but you can set your own difficulty. Crazy Hand's challenges always end by fighting him, so you can try to increase your reward by completing more challenges before facing off against him.
You'll be able to use the Wii U Gamepad as a second screen, or just to hold character portraits and health percentages. You'll also be able to use the stylus to freehand draw your own stages and place obstacles before sharing them online.
They're working on including Tournaments in the game, but it's looking like it won't be done in time for the release. But it looks like you'll be able to host tournaments as well as participate in them online.
Alright, I lied earlier. The biggest news is reserved for those of you who are planning on buying both the 3DS version and the Wii U version. First, everything you have saved on the 3DS version is transferable to the Wii U version. If you buy both versions and register them by January 13th, you'll get a two-disk soundtrack from the games; but more importantly, you'll also get Mewtwo as a playable character for free when he becomes available as DLC in the spring of 2015!
There's also a lot of less impressive announcements, like the return of Coin Battles, Stamina Matches, Classic Mode, All-Star Mode, Event Mode, and stuff we've already heard about like Amiibos, the special Gamecube controller adapter, and being able to use your 3DS as a controller for the Wii U version.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be in stores in North America on November 21st, and if you want to get a head start on the competition, you can get Super Smash Bros. for 3DS now.
