Oculus is having a little conference for developers called Oculus Connect. At the conference, Brendan Iribe announced a new prototype codenamed Crescent Bay.
The CEO of Oculus said Crescent Bay is as big of a leap from DK2 as DK2 was to DK1. Highlights of improvements include:
I'm guessing Crescent Bay uses the Galaxy Note 4 screen, which supports a resolution of 2560x1440. The DK2 uses the Galaxy Note 3 screen, which has a resolution of 1920x1080. But, they could be using some other display for the prototype.
The headphones can be removed so that you can use your own if you like. I know they look a little, out of place, but at least you can change them out.
Being an avid user of DK2, I really would love to see how the new prototype measures up. Now, Oculus said they weren't releasing anymore developer kits so this could be the step towards a consumer version. Of course, they can change their minds, but I'd love to see them finalize the product for the general public.
There's still a ways to go to make the Oculus Rift user friendly. I've ran into many problems trying to get things to work so we all have to be patient so that when you do buy one, the setup will be as painless as possible.
All told, Crescent Bay looks mighty interesting and has some good improvements on paper.
