Despite assurances that they were focusing on new games instead of retro games Sony announced today that they are working on six new retro titles for the PS3 online service. The games are Championship Sprint, Gauntlet II, Joust, Rampage, Mortal Kombat II and Rampart. We didn't get the press release on the games but Dan and I got to play the games at the SOE suite today. The developer indicated that they had just started on the games last week but what we saw today looked pretty good. Rampart actually played pretty well with the d-pad and Championship Sprint was a blast once we got used to how touchy the controls were. Mortal Kombat II was also pretty good and I had a blast kicking Dan's ass with Scorpion but Dan reciprocated by thrashing me in Joust. We didn't get a chance to play Gauntlet II but it looks pretty good.
They still haven't worked out what features they are going to include with the games (such as voice chat) or the pricing of the games. Joust will be playable over Sony's online service (like the XBLA version) and I would hope that that Gauntlet II and Rampart will be as well.
