Earlier today Sam broke the news about Nintendo's new 3DS IP, Code Name S.T.E.A.M. Now you can watch the developer press conference where they revealed the game and went into detail about its mechanics. Naturally I love the steampunk art style and crazy setting and story, but I also love that the idea of steampunk isn't just for show. A lot of games will call themselves steampunk just by slapping cogs and pistons and brass pipes all over everything, but in Code Name S.T.E.A.M. it actually means something.
The "fuel" for your units is, well, steam, and it determines the actions and attacks you can take during a turn and how much you can move around before you use up that turn. Everything is literally steam-powered. I also like that the game has a solid third-person camera, as a lot of strategy titles have always felt stiff and restrictive to me. Nintendo's new 3DS IP looks to offer a lot more freedom and a more intuitive interface for gamers who might be new to the strategy genre. I just hope more casual gamers don't get the name confused with that other kind of Steam, as the word means a very different thing to a vast community of gamers and even the general press.
