Square Enix has done an amazing job of bringing their classic JRPGs to mobile devices over the years, with great ports like The World Ends With You: Solo Remix and Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Red Lions. Their newest release is a mobile remake of the PS2 title Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, which released quietly on mobile yesterday. Originally released in 2004, Dragon Quest VIII was the first full 3D Dragon Quest game with beautiful art by developer Level-5, and it appears that the art has remained somewhat intact after the transition to mobile. Sadly, as with most Square mobile games the price is steep, $19.99 on both iOS and Android.
I was excited when the rumors of this game's release popped up earlier this week, but for $20 I could get a used PS2 copy just as easily. I would love to play it on my iPhone, but you gotta meet me halfway Square. Whether I am able to afford it or not, it's exciting to see Square getting more daring with their ports. Hopefully we see more PS2 titles come to mobile in the future.
