One of my favorite parts of PAX East is checking out the indie megabooth and seeing all kinds of innovating and fun games that I have not heard about. Over the next few days I am going to highlight some of my favorite games that I discovered down on the show floor.
The first game up is Robot Roller Derby Disco Dodgeball.
You play as cute little robots on roller skates in dance club like arenas while catchy techno music is blasting in the background. The game is played in the first person perspective so those who are familiar and enjoy those kinds of games should easily be able to hop in and have some fun.
What makes the game so great is that it actually feels like a real dodgeball game, with every hit being an instant kill. Picking up a ball, hitting them, and watching them explode into a million pieces never gets old. The game is really intense as well as you always need to watch your back. The arena is always filled with multiple balls so attacks will be coming from every direction. Just like in real dodgeball, if you can time it just right, you can also catch an opponents incoming ball which gives you a kill. I only played for a few minutes and it was the most fun I have had with an FPS in a long time.
The build at PAX only had 4 player LAN Free for All playable but the game also includes online multiplayer, multiple game modes including Deathmatch, Score Battle, Kill the Carrier, Demolition Derby, Elimination, Hoops and more.
I found myself coming back to this booth over and over again throughout the weekend because I couldn't get enough of it and I am excited to see what the community could come up with if workshop support is added in the future. These are the kinds of games that I love. They are different. It's an FPS game but it doesn't involve shooting everything in sight on a military battlefield which seems to be the norm these days.
Robot Roller Derby Disco Dodgeball is currently available to buy on Steam early access for $9.99.
It also gets my Trailer of The Year Award as well. Seriously this trailer is amazing.
