Last year the fighting game tournament EVO held a donation drive to let fans decide what game they wanted to see at the tournament. The extremely dedicated Super Smash Bros. Melee community raised nearly $100,000 to get the game into the lineup, and when it came time to play it was the second most watched game of the tournament, even beating out Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition at its height. It was an amazing tournament, but nobody was sure if the game would make a return. Now Nintendo has confirmed that they will allow Super Smash Bros. Melee to return for EVO 2014. What should we expect now that Nintendo is officially sanctioning the games' inclusion? I don't know, but I hope that they take advantage of the popular event to showcase Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.
Melee is without a doubt my favorite fighting game to watch so I'm extremely excited to hear that it is making a return to the biggest stage in the fighting game community. Hopefully the finals will be just as hype as they were last year, and maybe we will see a new victor emerge this year. EVO 2014 begins July 11th and goes through the 13th.
