Valve's MOBA Dota 2 is a worldwide phenomenon with millions of players all over the globe. Each year the best players in the world meet for Dota 2's biggest tournament, The International. In an attempt to give the average Dota 2 player a feel for what it is like to participate in this massive event, Valve had a film crew follow three of the games most famous players at the event to create this documentary named "Free to Play". The three players featured in the film are Benedict "HyHy" Lim, Clinton "Fear" Loomis, and Danil "Dendi" Ishtun. The movie shows not only what it's like to be at the tournament, but also the sacrifices these players made to make it so far. The movie's official Steam release is set for March 19th, but there will be a premiere event in San Francisco at The Castro Theater March 18th. The movie can be streamed or downloaded completely free, but there will be an accompanying in game item pack fans can buy, with the proceeds going to the players featured in the movie.
As a big fan of Dota 2 (and Dendi's team Natus Vincere) I am really looking forward to checking "Free to Play" out. When you watch a tournament you hardly get any insight into the player's feelings, and hopefully this movie can bring out the human side of a digital sport.
